Located in the historic downtown core of Driggs, Idaho, the Cooke Office Building is a contemporary professional workspace rooted in the architectural traditions of the Teton Valley. Inspired by the early 20th-century commercial buildings that define the character of downtown Driggs, the project balances contextual design, regional materials, and efficient modern office planning.

The building’s exterior responds directly to the scale, massing, and material character of the surrounding streetscape. Brick and limestone-toned plaster reference the masonry construction of traditional downtown commercial buildings, allowing the new architecture to complement its historic context without relying on imitation. The design reflects principles developed by Ward Blake Architects to encourage thoughtful, contextually appropriate growth in downtown Driggs.

Working with a client who is a Teton Valley native, the design team shared a commitment to creating a building that would contribute positively to the evolving downtown environment. Carefully selected materials, proportions, and architectural details establish a strong relationship with neighboring structures while giving the Cooke Office Building a distinct and enduring identity.

While the exterior is grounded in regional commercial architecture, the interior provides a distinctly modern workplace tailored to the needs of the client’s accounting firm. Within the compact 20-by-50-foot, two-story building, offices are efficiently organized around a skewed central corridor that introduces movement and visual interest to the plan. A full-height basement expands the usable area and maximizes the potential of the constrained downtown site.

Natural daylight plays an important role in the interior experience. A large second-story skylight fills the entry with sunlight, bringing daylight deep into the building and creating a welcoming arrival. A custom-designed steel art railing adds a personal element to the space, reflecting the client’s connection to the outdoors and demonstrating how functional architectural components can also contribute meaning and character.

The Cooke Office Building reflects Ward Blake Architects’ approach to commercial architecture, workplace design, and contextual development in Driggs and the greater Teton Valley. By combining historic downtown character with contemporary planning and thoughtful daylighting, the project demonstrates how new commercial architecture can respect local identity while supporting the evolving needs of a modern mountain community.
