day residence
The Day Residence is a custom mountain home shaped by its relationship to the Teton Range. Designed by Ward + Blake Architects, the residence uses site-specific planning, expressive roof forms, and carefully framed views to create a sophisticated example of luxury residential architecture rooted in the mountain landscape.
The home's gently arcing, fan-shaped plan unfolds toward the west, orienting the primary living spaces to panoramic views of the Tetons. Upturned rooflines reinforce this connection, rising at an angle that echoes the natural line of sight toward the mountain peaks. Public spaces—including the living, dining, and gathering areas—open toward the dramatic western views, while private bedrooms and supporting spaces are sheltered along the eastern side of the residence.
A central double-loaded corridor acts as the organizational spine of the home, connecting public and private spaces within the curved plan. The arrival sequence is intentionally choreographed through compression and release: an intimate foyer creates a sense of enclosure before opening dramatically into the expansive great room, where floor-to-ceiling glazing reveals sweeping mountain views and fills the interior with natural light.
The connection between architecture and landscape extends beyond orientation. A consistent material palette flows between interior and exterior spaces, visually dissolving the boundary between the home and its natural surroundings. Expansive glazing and carefully framed sightlines continually draw attention outward, making the Teton landscape an integral part of the architectural experience.
Inside, the residence balances rustic mountain architecture with refined contemporary craftsmanship. Lodgepole pine columns are precisely shaped and hand-finished to retain their tactile character, while custom African mahogany millwork introduces warmth and sophistication. Juparana Gold granite, Indian limestone, and Venetian plaster create a rich yet harmonious material palette that complements rather than competes with the surrounding scenery.
The Day Residence exemplifies Ward + Blake Architects' expertise in luxury residential architecture, custom mountain home design, site-specific architecture, and indoor-outdoor living. Through thoughtful orientation, natural materials, exceptional craftsmanship, and a design centered on panoramic Teton views, the residence creates a timeless mountain retreat where architecture serves as a frame for the extraordinary landscape.
