Located on the Wind River Reservation in Fort Washakie, Wyoming, the Fort Washakie K–8 & High School was designed to create a modern educational environment that supports academic achievement, student wellness, and community engagement. Ward + Blake Architects developed a flexible, high-performance K–12 school that balances durability, functionality, and welcoming learning spaces while responding to the unique needs of students, educators, and the surrounding community.

The school brings together classrooms, collaborative learning environments, athletic facilities, administrative offices, and shared gathering spaces into a cohesive campus designed to foster connection and lifelong learning. Thoughtful planning promotes intuitive circulation, clear wayfinding, and opportunities for interaction while creating secure, adaptable spaces that accommodate evolving educational programs.

At the heart of the facility is a spacious multi-purpose commons that serves as a hub for student life, school events, and community gatherings. Filled with natural light and anchored by a large stone fireplace, the commons provides a warm, inviting environment that encourages collaboration, informal learning, and social connection throughout the school day.

The gymnasium and athletic facilities were designed to support physical education programs, school athletics, assemblies, and community events. Durable finishes, high-performance flooring, retractable seating, and flexible court layouts allow the space to accommodate a wide variety of athletic competitions and extracurricular activities while serving as an important gathering place for the community.

Classrooms throughout the K–8 and high school emphasize flexibility, daylight, and technology integration. Large windows introduce abundant natural light to improve student comfort and concentration, while adaptable learning environments support both traditional instruction and collaborative, project-based education. Dedicated spaces for administration, student services, and faculty provide efficient operational support while strengthening communication throughout the campus.

The building’s architectural expression combines low-maintenance brick masonry, concrete masonry units, and contemporary detailing to create a durable educational facility designed for long-term performance in Wyoming’s climate. High-quality materials, efficient building systems, and thoughtful construction solutions help reduce maintenance costs while providing a safe, resilient environment for generations of students.

Beyond serving as a place for education, the Fort Washakie K–8 & High School was envisioned as a lasting community resource. Flexible gathering spaces, athletic facilities, and shared commons encourage year-round use by students, families, and local organizations, strengthening the school’s role as a civic destination within the Wind River Reservation.
