The Rick's College Baseball Field (now Brigham Young University–Idaho) was designed to create an exceptional collegiate baseball experience while responding thoughtfully to the natural topography of the site. Designed by Ward + Blake Architects, the project transforms the existing landscape into a functional, fan-focused athletic venue that balances performance, durability, and timeless architectural design. By integrating the facility into the land rather than imposing upon it, the project demonstrates how thoughtful site planning can enhance both the spectator experience and the long-term value of collegiate athletic facilities.

The design capitalizes on the site's naturally occurring amphitheater-like terrain, allowing spectator seating to be carefully embedded within the existing slope. This approach minimizes site disturbance while providing excellent sightlines to the field, reducing construction costs, and creating an intimate game-day atmosphere where fans feel closely connected to the action.

Visitor arrival was carefully choreographed to create a memorable experience. Spectators enter the facility through a defined entrance sequence that leads into an enclosed stairway before dramatically opening to reveal an expansive home plate view of the playing field. This intentional progression creates a sense of anticipation and arrival, transforming a simple circulation route into a memorable architectural experience while immediately orienting visitors to the stadium.

Positioned directly above the primary entry, the announcer's booth serves both functional and architectural purposes. Elevated to provide unobstructed panoramic views of the NCAA-compliant field, the structure also screens views of the stadium from the street, creating a stronger sense of discovery upon entry while establishing a distinctive architectural identity for the facility.

The baseball complex was designed to support every aspect of collegiate competition with a comprehensive collection of athletic amenities. In addition to the regulation playing field, the project includes team dugouts, public restrooms, equipment storage, and a fully integrated announcer's booth, all organized to maximize operational efficiency while enhancing the experience of athletes, coaches, officials, and spectators.

Durability and long-term performance were central to the design philosophy. Ward + Blake Architects selected a palette of low-maintenance, high-performance materials, including TREX® composite decking, exposed concrete masonry, and standing seam metal roofing, to reduce maintenance requirements and minimize lifecycle costs. These materials provide exceptional resilience while reinforcing the architectural character of the facility and incorporating the school's colors into the overall design.

The surrounding landscape was carefully integrated with the architecture to strengthen the connection between the stadium and its natural setting. Native landscaping, pedestrian circulation, and site grading work together to create a cohesive campus environment while enhancing accessibility, managing drainage, and preserving the site's natural character.

Beyond serving as a collegiate baseball venue, the facility functions as a gathering place for students, alumni, and the surrounding community. Its welcoming design, efficient circulation, and carefully planned spectator amenities create an environment that supports athletic competition while fostering school pride and community engagement.
