trout residence
The Trout Residence is a custom mountain home designed to maximize panoramic views while minimizing its visual impact on a highly visible site. Through a low-slung, asymmetrical composition, Ward + Blake Architects created a distinctive example of contemporary mountain architecture that balances expressive modern forms with a restrained palette of natural, earth-toned materials.
The residence is composed of contrasting architectural forms that converge to create a dynamic relationship between building and landscape. On the north-facing elevation, a dramatic triangular roofline echoes the rugged silhouette of the Teton Range, while a sweeping glass-and-steel railing and semicircular terrace introduce a softer counterpoint. Together, these elements give the home a strong architectural identity without overwhelming its panoramic setting.
Expansive floor-to-ceiling windows strengthen the connection between interior and exterior spaces, filling the home with natural daylight and framing the surrounding mountain landscape. The arrival sequence is carefully choreographed to create an immediate connection to place: from the entry hall, visitors look through a wall of glass across the barrel-vaulted living room to a carefully framed view of the Grand Teton.
Inside, architectural details reinforce the home's sense of openness and lightness. Wood-clad steel columns appear to float between levels, while recessed ceiling panels visually reduce the scale of the interior and add depth to the expansive living spaces. The interplay of structure, glass, natural materials, and carefully framed views creates a refined environment that feels both dramatic and intimately connected to its surroundings.
The Trout Residence exemplifies Ward + Blake Architects' approach to luxury residential architecture, site-specific custom home design, and modern mountain architecture. By combining expressive form, natural materials, expansive glazing, and a thoughtful response to the landscape, the residence creates a timeless mountain home centered on the extraordinary beauty of the Teton region.
