This extensive mountain home renovation transforms a traditional residence into a modern, highly functional family home while strengthening its connection to the surrounding landscape. Designed by Ward + Blake Architects, the 85-percent renovation combines contemporary architecture, sustainable design strategies, durable materials, and custom craftsmanship to create a distinctive expression of modern mountain living.
A low-maintenance material palette of Corten steel, Cem-Clad panels, structural steel, cedar, and living sod roofs establishes continuity between exterior and interior spaces. Enlarged existing windows and carefully positioned new openings introduce abundant natural light, frame views of the surrounding landscape, and create a stronger connection between indoor and outdoor living. Where possible, planted sod roofs further integrate the architecture with its natural setting while helping moderate temperature fluctuations and improve energy efficiency.
At the heart of the residence, a sculptural glass-and-steel staircase connects all three levels in an irregular zigzag configuration. Its transparent construction allows light and views to move through the home, transforming a functional circulation element into a defining architectural feature.
Inside, warm natural materials balance the home's contemporary detailing. Douglas fir ceiling panels, bamboo flooring, custom built-ins, architect-designed furniture, and ponderosa pine-clad windows introduce texture, warmth, and intimacy throughout the living spaces. Each material and detail was carefully considered to support the needs of an active family while maintaining a cohesive architectural identity.
The completed renovation demonstrates Ward + Blake Architects' expertise in luxury residential remodeling, contemporary mountain architecture, sustainable home renovation, and custom residential design. By reimagining the majority of the original structure rather than replacing it, the project creates a highly personalized modern home that combines architectural innovation, energy-conscious design, and enduring craftsmanship.
